RTÜK President Ebubekir Şahin: “Whilst regulating the development of media and Artificial Intelligence (AI), we aim to keep the society’s quality to access information at the highest standards.”
President of the Radio and Television Supreme Council, Ebubekir Şahin said in his speech at the opening of the "AI Tomorrow Summit" organized by the London Embassy of the Republic of Türkiye and the Artificial Intelligence Policy Association (AIPA) in cooperation with RTÜK, that Türkiye is carrying out studies to use AI in many areas.
Stating that these technologies bring with them a number of obligations that require the regulation of ethical values of media and the reconsideration of user rights, Şahin stated that, as RTÜK, we have closely followed the dynamism in the field of these technologies.
Şahin said that RTÜK has aimed to keep the society's access to information and its quality at the highest standards while regulating the usage of AI by media and added to his words that they have expected innovative approaches to be encouraged in the sector.
Şahin also added that the RTÜK’s Digital Recording and Archive Analysis System (SKAAS) developed within the TUBITAK (the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye) - SPACE, is a domestic system where AI is used at the highest level.
“We need to take the ethical and social concerns into account”
Türkiye's Ambassador to London Osman Koray Ertaş also stated that artificial intelligence has begun to be used in many areas in a short time.
Stating that AI would affect daily life in different sectors, from professions to health and security, Ertaş said, "The benefits offered by AI are important. While AI supports development, it offers great potential to increase efficiency and solve ongoing challenges. However, when using the power of it, we will need to take ethical and social concerns into account.” He also said that while maximizing the beneficial aspects of AI, it would also be of great importance to foresee its possible negative effects and take preventive steps."
Zafer Küçükşabanoğlu, as the founding President of AIPA, drew attention to the impact of AI on economic developments.
Stating that AI is transforming the world, Küçükşabanoğlu emphasized that the technology in question will affect almost all sectors, especially agriculture, energy, media, international relations and education.
